Make It Easy To Change System Icons

We'll show you how to change icons on Windows 10, including program and folder icons. With a bit of work, you'll have an all-new interface with a unique look! While we focus on Windows 10 here, these tips largely work the same on Windows 11.

Windows 10 makes it easy to change the program icon for a shortcut, but not the main executable. Thus, you should make a desktop shortcut for the app icon you want to change, if you don't have one already.

Using this, you can set up separate icons to distinguish file types, even if they open in the same program. You might want to make it easier to highlight JPG and PNG files at a glance, or spot old DOC Word files not using the newer DOCX format, for instance.

Windows has blank icons built-in. But in our testing, these can appear as black squares on your Taskbar instead of transparent boxes, which is no good. This means you'll need to quickly make your own "blank" icon.

Just want to adjust the size of Windows 10 icons on your desktop? That's an easy fix. On the desktop, you can right-click any empty space and choose View to select Small icons, Medium icons, or Large icons.

This will launch a new window where you can toggle the icons for This PC, your user folder, Network, Control Panel, and the Recycle Bin. While here, you can also change the icons for these shortcuts if you want.

Now you know how to change nearly every icon on your Windows system. Whether you want to completely overhaul everything or just want to change a few shortcut icons, you have the tools to personalize your computer in a fun way.

If there are no icons available in the list, the manufacturer may not supply additional icons. To find other icons, follow the same procedure on a different icon, locate its source file (usually an .ico file), and then go back to the original icon that you want to change. Follow the same procedure, but when you click the Change Icon button, browse to the location of the source file from the different icon.NOTE: Third-party tools are available that enable you to change icons. For additional information about changing icon pictures, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

These icons were designed to follow the material design guidelines and they look best when using the recommended icon sizes and colors. The styles below make it easy to apply our recommended sizes, colors, and activity states.

Using the icon font allows for easy styling of an icon in any color. In accordance with material design icon guidelines, for active icons we recommend using either black at 54% opacity or white at 100% opacity when displaying these on light or dark backgrounds, respectively. If an icon is disabled or inactive, using black at 26% or white at 30% for light and dark backgrounds, respectively.

Do you want to customize the appearance of the icons on your Windows desktop? You can adjust icons by using the "Properties" options or you make new desktop icons entirely. You'll only be able to change the icon for system desktop icons, folders, and shortcuts. This wikiHow will show you how to change a desktop icon's appearance and how to download or create a custom icon on your Windows computer.

If you want to change icons and the OS behavior, use trusted solutions like Windows Blinds, Fences, or Start11 from Stardock. It costs a few bucks, but it is a trusted program without malware and includes several customization options.

Use the directions above and change the other system icons you want on your Windows 11 system. For example, in the shot below, we changed This PC and Network icons to a Star Wars theme.

Use the steps above to change the folder icons you want to use custom icons. For example, we changed a system icon and an Office files folder to Star Wars themes. We also added a Star Wars desktop wallpaper for good measure.

If you want to change up your icons for easier data management or just for fun, Windows has a lot of options. And the great news is that thousands of quality icons and other artwork are also available.

Normally, an icon set contains from three to five icons, consequently the cell values in a formatted range are divided into three to five groups from high to low. For instance, a 3-icon set uses one icon for values greater than or equal to 67%, another icon for values between 67% and 33%, and yet another icon for values lower than 33%. However, you are free to change this default behavior and define your own criteria. How to use icon sets in ExcelTo apply an icon set to your data, this is what you need to do:

That's it! The icons will appear inside the selected cells straight away. How to customize Excel icon setsIf you are not happy with the way Excel has interpreted and highlighted your data, you can easily customize the applied icon set. To make edits, follow these steps:

  • This is very close to the desired result, isn't it? To get rid of the Note column, which has become redundant, copy the contents of the Icon column, and then use the Paste Special feature to paste as values in the same place. However, please keep in mind that this will make your icons static, so they won't respond to changes in the original data. If you are working with an updatable dataset, skip this step.

  • Now, you can safely hide or delete (if you replaced the formulas with calculated values) the Note column without affecting the text labels and symbols in the Icon column. Done!

Note. In this example, we've used a 3-icon set. Applying 5-icon sets based on text is also possible but requires more manipulations.

Now to keep track of my budget budget, regardless of what my salary changes to be, I'd like to have indicators/icons when my spending is at 30% (green flag), 50% (yellow flag) and 60% (red flag) of my salary without having to individually set each cell every month when the salary changes, as it varies every month. Is this possible?

If you want to be able to change system icons you would have to disable the System Integrity Protection, not a good idea. You might create AppleScripts or Automator scripts to open Mail, Contacts, Safari and add these scripts to the Dock instead of the original applications.

How true! Being able to customize and personalize the Mac, and make it look unique used to be fun. Since MacOs X Lion are the macs dull and gray. First a grey sidebar, and now the app icons of many apps can only be changed by disabling the security settings.

This will allow you to change system files all right, but it is dangerous because it will make your mac vulnerable. It disables the System Integrity Protection. If you accidentally download malware it will be able to install kernel extensions or troyans right into the system libraries.

no it has not lost the sec features. the only things that "remain" changed are the ones the I waned changed, meaning the .png (icons/folders) on applications. the systems it self has not been compromised unless some of the readers have done anything while the settings was disable, such as installing "unsafe" software or visiting unsafe" sites. Normally if your Mac has the firewall up and running, and pw protection you are safe.
