I have a 2007 Mac Mini that has reached the end of its useful life. It won't run anything newer than OSX 10.7.5. The built in CD drive is questionable (last time used it scratched the disk up pretty bad).

After using Logic since the eMagic days I will now have to investigate shifting to another DAW simply in order to be able to run the same software on my tower (studio machine) and laptop (live recording). There's thankfully no great rush as Logic 9 is no less capable today than it was yesterday, but I think today is a very sad day even so.
I don't think you are overthinking this. Studios that spent upwards of 6K on a Mac Pro in 2008 who wish to keep up and be compatible with other now have a hunk of junk sitting in their studio. In the business world, MS supports some pretty ancient systems running Windows XP to this day and that's why they have the business market cornered. Apple need to do the same with it's professional customers in the entertainment industry if they want to avoid annoyed customers from switching over to Windows.
Being complacent about existing customer's loyalty has been the undoing of many a company. I've been using Apple Mac's since 1991 and will continue to use my current machines for years to come, but unless I see significant signs of change I won't be reinvesting in new Apple hardware for my studio. I'm probably in a tiny minority but as a long time Apple user in a Windows world that's not exactly a new feeling!
